New Year, New Site

Welcome back to school 2013!  We made it through the first week in one piece… I will be editing and updating this site to reflect our newest schedule.  Be sure to follow this blog to get the newest updates as they are posted.

Its going to be a great year of diving deep into Biology!

Statistics Help!

Statistics help us to extract meaning in the data from our investigations.  Applying stats in AP Biology is important to be able to communicate what our findings mean.  I have been adding links to great statistics help material to our Lab page- Statistical Analysis.  If you have other helpful sites, add a comment so I can add it to our page.

Thank you & Unit 1 Recap

First, I want to thank you for your hard work and patience this week while my son was in the hospital. It was incredible how fast a microorganism can invade and take over the lungs.  He got very sick in a matter of hours.  He is much better- we are still in the hospital now (10:00 on Friday), but will hopefully be going home in a little bit.

UPDATE: We are home!  We got home about 2:00 on Friday.  So, I will see you Monday!

I appreciate your dedication to your own learning to keep moving forward.  Because of my absence this week, lets recap what we have studied in this first unit:

  • Week 1 (8/20-8/24)- The Big Ideas & the Processes of Science Investigation using Checks activity & by designing your experiment on pill bugs/ meal worms and presenting your findings in a mini poster
  • Week 2 (8/27-8/31)- After day off for TS Isaac, we did Chemistry basics, Properties of Water & began building Macromolecules (need to do 2 more models- Proteins & Nucleic Acids)
  • Week 3 (9/4-9/7)- Macromolecule summary, Connection of Macros to Environmental Cycles, Intro to Metabolism
  • Week 4 (9/10-9/14)- Metabolism, Enzymes & Gibbs Free Energy, Enzyme Activity Lab & Unit test; (Wed 9/12 is Early Release)

Unit 2 is Evolution, so if BioChem was “not your favorite,” we are moving on.  Keep in mind, we will refer to the macromolecules and metabolism throughout the course, so don’t completely move on!  But, once you have the foundation, the rest is just adding the details.

Thank you again- because of your hard work, we stayed on track even with my absence :).  Fantastic work, Biofanatics!
